Nail Fungus (Onychomycosis) Treatment

It is an infectious ailment that occurs when the nail bed is infected with a fungal microbe.

Treatment Method

Fungi especially prefer humid environments, and they can be transmitted to people by way of walking barefoot in places such as pools, gyms, Turkish baths, saunas, or by way of sharing of slippers.

It initially causes a localized white-yellow color change in the nail, if it is not treated, it may cause thickening of the entire nail and deformation causing disturbance when wearing shoes, as well as stinging and bad odor.

Topical medications and polishes are often insufficient in the treatment of nail fungus because they cannot penetrate into the nail bed. Treatment of nail fungus with systemic drugs takes an average of 6 months and requires regular monitoring of liver functions due to the characteristics of the drugs used.

Treatment of nail fungus with laser is performed by using Nd:YAG Laser. Laser therapy can be used alone in the early stages of nail fungus, or it can be added to the systemic treatment in progressed infections and shorten the treatment period. It is also a safe alternative treatment for patients who cannot use systemic therapy due to co-morbidities or medications that they are using.
